Introducing MMU’s New Podcast Hosting Solution – In Moodle

Over the last few months the ‘Learning & Teaching’ team within the department of Learning and Research Technologies (LRT) headed by Professor Mark Stubbs have been busy researching for a new, better, robust and a scalable system to replace our existing out-dated Apple Podcast system which is currently servicing the MMU podcasting user community. The successful company we have partnered with are called Kaltura who will provide our podcasting hosting needs, expandability, scalable and integration solution to MMU’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Moodle and other systems.

The new video plugins as an option in Moodle will be released and available in your area in the New Year. The release date for this option for general use will be in January 2013.

The new podcast solution offers upload of many different file formats such as MOV, MP4, MPG, WMV, AVI, MPG, FLV, ASF,, F4V,M4V, QT. Once the podcast is uploaded the system transcode the media into number of different flavours. These flavours allows for the podcast to play on number of different hand held devices ie different tablets and smart phones.

Using the Video Options in Moodle

In Moodle when you Turn Editing On there will be three new options for you to explore and use in your learning and teaching to make your podcast resource available to your students.

Under ‘Add a Resource’

Option 1 – Video
This option can be used to upload and deliver your video (podcast) you have created to your audience.

Option 2 – SlideSync Video
This option allows syncing of PowerPoint slides into your podcast at appropriate places in the timeline of your podcast. As an example – if you want to create a lecture capture look and feel effect to your podcast you can webcam yourself and afterwards sync your slides into the podcast timeline. This is one example but there are other possibilities that can be explored.

Under ‘Add an Activity’

Option 3 – Assignment – Video
This option allows for a video assignment to be set. Create your assignment for your students. The students produce a video for the assignment and upload it before the due date.

Advance options
Uploaded videos to the system are placed in ‘mmutube’ media space under your area called ‘my media’.

This is your personal area; you choose how your resource to be available to your students. From here you can manage your media by publishing in any of the three galleries available to you.

Public – If you publish in this gallery then anyone who comes across this site will be able to search and view your podcasts.

MMU-Only – All videos are placed in this gallery from within Moodle. Access to this video outside of Moodle would be challenged by MMU userid and password.

MMU-Campus – Any video published in this gallery will only play within the boundaries of MMU computers and wifi.

This new system offer staff an easier workflow for delivery of a podcast to the students via the institutional VLE Moodle, more media file format for upload and easy accessiblility to resources via many different mobile devices on the go.
